It is a statutory requirement for schools to provide homework for children, however, at Fortuna we understand the difficulties that homework may cause to family life. Therefore, we have designed a homework system that can support children’s learning but also provides opportunities for rest and play within the family. If you have time during the evening here are some of the things you may wish to look at with your child.
Reading
Each child is provided with a reading book that they can share with an adult at home during the evenings. Children also have a reading record book which adults can share any comments that they have about their child’s reading, and the children can keep track of what page number they get to.
Spellings
Each child will be provided with a list of spellings that they are focusing on learning each term which adults may want to practise with their child. These spellings will be written in the homework diary which is sent out each year.
Maths
Each term, children will focus on one Key Instant Recall Fact (KIRF) within class that they can also practise at home as well. The KIRF that your child is working on will be written in their homework diary. Ideas on how to practise these will be posted below. Parents and carers can also request a hard copy to be sent home if they are unable to access the digital copies.
Topic
A further piece of homework may be set for the term that will be linked to one of the topics your child is learning about in class that they may choose to complete.
10-Minute Miracles
At Fortuna School, we understand the importance of play in the development of physical, cognitive and social emotional skills. The idea of the 10-Minute Miracle is to spend 10 minutes each evening playing with your child which helps develop and strengthen relationships as well as having fun. There are a few ideas in your child’s homework diary but please do not hesitate in contacting your child’s class teacher if you would like further ideas for this.
