Foundation

Fortuna’s curriculum is specifically designed to centre round reading. At Fortuna, we believe that by exposing children and immersing them in stories, they will not only improve their reading outcome but also improve in all other areas of the curriculum.

The curriculum runs over a 2-year cycle and includes successful elements of our previous curriculums including immersive areas and real life contexts. However, instead of foundation subjects driving the curriculum, the book will become central to the topic with the foundation subjects linking where possible.

Here you can see the overviews for the foundation subjects in each cycle as well as the knowledge organisers for each foundation subject. Where possible the foundation subjects link to the text however, some subjects will stand alone.

Religious Education 
Fortuna School follows the Lincolnshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education.

Religious Education is provided as part of the curriculum in accordance with the requirements applicable to maintained schools.

Right to Withdraw
Parents/carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of Religious Education. Parents/carers wishing to exercise this right should contact the Headteacher.

Our Approach to RSE
At Fortuna, RSE is part of our wider PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) curriculum. It helps children learn about:

  • Healthy and caring relationships
  • Respect for themselves and others
  • Emotional, social, and physical development
  • Staying safe online and offline

RSE is age and developmentally-appropriate and inclusive.

What Your Child Will Learn

  1. Attitudes and Values – Understanding fairness, respect, and values – Exploring moral dilemmas and making responsible choices – Learning about consent and personal boundaries
  2. Personal and Social Skills – Managing emotions and relationships confidently – Recognising unsafe situations and knowing how to seek help – Developing empathy and understanding differences – Group work, problem-solving, and reflection
  3. Knowledge and Understanding – Physical development and human biology – Emotions, relationships, and growing up – Online safety and digital relationships – Preparing for puberty in a supportive environment.

Your Role as a Parent/Carer

  • You are your child’s primary educator on relationships and growing up
  • Open discussion at home is encouraged; we provide supporting resources
  • View lesson materials and discuss content with staff anytime
  • Option to withdraw your child from non-statutory RSE lessons beyond the National Curriculum (the school will ask for written consent prior to teaching non-statutory content)

Safeguarding & Confidentiality

  • Staff follow strict safeguarding procedures if concerns arise
  • Confidentiality is respected, but risk disclosures are shared according to safeguarding rules
  • All lessons and materials are suitable for age, background, and individual needs

Working Together

  • RSE is a partnership between school, parents/carers, and the wider community
  • Health professionals, youth workers, and visitors support learning while following school policy
  • Goal: prepare children for healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing, and life skills in a safe and supportive environment

PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) at Fortuna Primary supports pupils’ emotional wellbeing, social development and personal growth. Using the Kapow Primary scheme, the curriculum is carefully sequenced to help children develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead safe, healthy and positive lives.

As an SEMH school, PSHE plays a central role in supporting pupils to:

  • understand and regulate emotions
  • build positive relationships
  • develop resilience and self-esteem
  • make safe and informed choices
  • improve communication and social interaction
  • prepare for life beyond school

Kapow’s PSHE curriculum is delivered through a spiral approach, meaning key themes are revisited each year with increasing depth and maturity. This helps pupils build on prior learning and apply skills consistently in everyday life.

Key Areas of Learning
The curriculum is organised into five main areas:

  • Family and Relationships – friendships, respect, kindness, anti-bullying and healthy relationships.
  • Health and Wellbeing – emotional wellbeing, mental health, healthy lifestyles and self-care.
  • Safety and the Changing Body – online safety, personal safety, boundaries, first aid and puberty education.
  • Citizenship – rights, responsibilities, diversity, inclusion and community awareness.
  • Economic Wellbeing – money management, aspirations, careers and decision-making.

For older pupils, additional learning around identity and transition supports preparation for secondary school.

At Fortuna Primary, PSHE learning is adapted to meet the social, emotional and mental health needs of pupils. Lessons provide:

  • predictable routines and safe discussion opportunities
  • emotional literacy development
  • restorative and reflective approaches
  • practical strategies for self-regulation
  • opportunities to practise social skills
  • inclusive and supportive learning experiences

The curriculum promotes pupil voice, confidence and independence while supporting safeguarding and personal development.

Curriculum Progression and Progress Map

Teaching Approach
At Fortuna PSHE is taught weekly and is supported by discussion, role play, collaborative activities and reflection. Learning is inclusive, age-appropriate and responsive to pupils’ needs and experiences. Assessment is mainly formative and focuses on pupils’ understanding, participation, emotional development and application of skills in real-life situations.
