Literacy
The story will lead all our work in English and history.
The children will explore Ancient Egypt through the story and follow the adventure of a young child who time travels.
This will support our learning about the Ancient Egyptians in our topic lessons. We will be developing our skills in Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry writing by studying story writing, newspaper articles and rhyming list poems.
We will practice skills needed to write in these styles before drafting our work and creating a final piece, ready to show off and celebrate with others.
Maths
This term we will be focusing on place value in our maths.

Science
In Science we will be learning about States of Matter. We will explore each state – solid, liquid and gas, investigating different everyday materials that we find in these states. After this we are going to experiment with how states can change by heating and cooling, trying not to get too messy with things like ice or chocolate!
We will follow this up by seeing how states of matter effect the world around us, learning about the water cycle and how this is fundamental to life on earth.
PE
This half term we will be focusing on fundamentals and our PE lesson will take place Monday each week.
Fundamental movement skills are like the building blocks of all the fun things your body can do. They're special moves that help you play, explore, and stay active.
Children will need to bring:
- white PE t-shirt
- black shorts or jogging bottoms
- plimsoles / non-marking trainers
Foundation Subjects
Linking with our class book that we will be reading in English the children will explore Ancient Egypt to immerse themselves in the exciting part of our history curriculum that truly captures children’s imaginations. From pharaohs and pyramids to hieroglyphs and mummies, this fascinating civilisation brings the past to life and makes learning both memorable and enjoyable.
Through exploring Ancient Egypt, children develop a deeper understanding of how and why people lived differently in another time and place. They begin to ask questions, investigate evidence, and think critically about the world around them. The topic also encourages pupils to compare societies and consider the lasting impact of Ancient Egypt on the modern world.
This area of study links naturally with many other subjects. Children might design their own tomb paintings in art, write in hieroglyphics during literacy, explore the River Nile in geography, or look at Egyptian number systems in maths. These cross-curricular connections make the learning experience richer and more meaningful.
Above all, Ancient Egypt inspires creativity and curiosity. By engaging with its stories, traditions, and achievements, children not only build historical knowledge but also develop important skills in questioning, reasoning, and communication that support their wider learning journey.
Personal Developmental Play
At Fortuna School, our play curriculum is far more than a break from learning—it’s a carefully crafted, powerful vehicle that nurtures every child’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.
We embed play into our school day, it is part of our lessons, social interactions and we deliberately make time in the day to take a break and immerse ourselves into some play which supports children’s emotional development by giving them the space to express feelings, build resilience, and develop self-confidence. It also encourages social growth, as children learn how to share, take turns, cooperate, and solve problems together.
Miss Weatherall particularly loves messy, sensory and water play, arts and crafts and having music on in class for a dance break!
