Mrs Kemlo’s Class

We have been enjoying the exciting story of Beowulf! The children have explored its characters and settings, learned new vocabulary and used freeze frames to retell the story. This week, we have had great fun creating a newspaper report about Beowulf’s incredible adventure. We are looking forward to using Beowulf for a range of other writing opportunities this term.

This term, our pupils are focusing on developing their number skills through fun, active and practical learning. Together, we are using a range of resources, including manipulatives, number lines and place value equipment, to build confidence and deepen pupils’ understanding of number.

In Science, we are learning all about teeth and digestion. We will explore the different types of teeth, discover what each one is used for and learn how to keep our teeth healthy. We will also investigate what happens to the food we eat as it travels through our digestive system.

This half term we will be focusing on fundamental skills where we will develop our running, jumping, balancing, throwing and catching skills. Our PE lesson will take place on Thursday each week, and children will need to bring:

• a white PE t-shirt
• black shorts or jogging bottoms
• black plimsoles / non-marking trainers

History

Our History learning will see us travelling back in time to explore the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will investigate who they were, where they came from and what life was like during this fascinating period of British history. We will also explore the impact they had on Britain.

Geography

In Geography, we are exploring Scandinavia; learning about its countries, landscapes, climate and people. We will develop our map-reading and geographical skills while discovering what makes this region of the world so unique.

RE

This term in RE, we are exploring the theme 'Welcoming New Life into the World'. We will consider how different religious traditions celebrate and welcome the arrival of a new baby; exploring special ceremonies, traditions and the importance of family and community.

PSHE

In PSHE we will be learning how to make healthy choices through a balanced diet, hydration and regular physical activity. We will also focus on ways to recognise and talk about our emotions while knowing when to ask for help.

Art

Our Art learning will be inspired by the artist Frida Kahlo. We will explore her distinctive style and use her work as inspiration for our own creative pieces, experimenting with colour, symbolism and self-portraiture.

Music

In Music, we are very lucky to be working with an external music company, led by Miss Benson. The children will have the opportunity to develop their musical skills, explore different aspects of music and enjoy making music together through practical activities.

DT

This term in DT, the children will take part in a specialised workshop that focuses on the core skills in design technology such as, problem solving, critical thinking and working as a team.

At Fortuna School, play is a meaningful and purposeful part of our curriculum, rather than simply a break from learning. It is carefully planned and used as an important tool to support children’s social, emotional and cognitive development. We use the Boxall Profile to help us understand and assess each child’s needs, ensuring that play opportunities are tailored to support their individual development.

Play is embedded throughout the school day, both within lessons and during dedicated times for children to explore, unwind and interact with others. These experiences help children to recognise and express their emotions, build confidence and develop resilience within a safe and nurturing environment. Play also supports social development, encouraging children to collaborate, share ideas and resources, take turns, and solve problems together.
