Miss Mulligan’s Class

This term we are reading Middleworld as a class.

Fourteen-year-old Max Murphy is looking forward to a long, lazy summer playing video games. But when his archaeologist parents disappear at an ancient Maya pyramid in Central America, Max must reluctantly get off the couch and investigate.

Not an adventurer by nature, Max soon finds himself lost and alone in a land of jaguars, giant spiders and deadly snakes. His chances of survival look slim - until he's rescued by Lola, a local Maya girl who has a mystery of her own to solve.

Joining forces, the city boy and the girl from the rainforest set off on a rollercoaster ride of adventure and suspense; running for their lives through the perilous jungle, reliving ancient myths, unlocking eerie secrets, and quikcly learning that those old pyramids are not quite as empty as they seem.

So far we have started to explore the characters and the language used to describe these characters. We are looking forward to reading some more of the book.

We began the term by exploring the different objects that we can use around the classroom if we need some support with our maths learning.

We have now started to explore place value using number lines, part whole models and place value charts.

Our topic for our science this term is 'animals including humans'. We are going to explore the different food groups and what each does for our body. We will then explore how the heart works, the circulatory system, how the lungs work and how physical exercise effects our body.

We are learning about fitness this term. We have already learnt that fitness incorporates strength, balance, speed, agility and stamina.

We are working hard on each of these features to improve our performance. Come back soon for some pictures of our PE lessons.

History - This term we are learning about The Ancient Mayan people. We are thinking like historians and using our observation, critical thinking, team work and detective skills to learn all about them.

So far, we have learnt when and where they lived and have also explored some ancient Mayan glyphs where we made an hypotheses about what each mean.

PSHE - We have learnt about relationships and how to deal with disagreements in our friendships. All of the children gave thoughtful responses to questions.

RE - In RE this term we are going to explore if we can trust everything we see or hear, how people know who or what to believe, who inspires people, how our values influence what people believe and do, what reasons people give for believing in God and different views about the existence of God.

Geography - In Geography we are going to explore the similarities and differences of human and physical geography of a region of the UK, a region in a European country and a region within Central America.  The areas we will be using for this are: Lincolnshire, Castile in Spain and the Yucatan in Mexico.
