Mr Tugwell’s Class

Welcome to Mr Tugwell’s class page! The adults supporting us this year are Miss Crampton and Miss Hart. Below you will find further information about all the exciting learning we will be doing over the course of the summer term.

In our Literacy lessons we will be reading ‘The Hodgeheg' by Dick King Smith. This will support our learning about Living things and their habitats in our topic lessons. We will be developing our skills in Fiction, Non-Fiction and Poetry writing by studying adventure stories, factfiles and haikus.

We will practice skills needed to write in these styles before drafting our work and creating a final piece, ready to show off and celebrate with others.

In Maths we will be building on the amazing work we have been doing throughout the year. Applying place value and the four operations, we will start to learn about geometry, fractions, measures and money.

We have been enjoying lots of practical activities in class to bring our learning to life, and as the warm weather approaches, we look forward to taking our maths learning outside to see maths in the wider world!

In Science we will be learning about Living Things and their Habitats. We will explore how to decide if something is alive or not, different types of animals and the habitats they choose, as well as ways to classify them.

This topic is perfect for the summer term as we will be able to take learning out of the classroom, searching for animals and observing their habitats for ourselves!

This half term we will be focusing on Hockey and our PE lesson will take place Wednesday each week.

Children will need to bring:

  • white PE t-shirt
  • black shorts or jogging bottoms
  • plimsoles / non-marking trainers

History - This term in History, children will be exploring Medieval History, developing their understanding of how the past has shaped Britain and the wider world. They will learn to place key events on a timeline to build their chronological awareness and explore themes across different periods. Pupils will study an aspect of local history from beyond 1066, helping them make meaningful connections to their own area. Throughout the unit, children will develop their enquiry skills by asking and answering historically valid questions, comparing similarities and differences over time, and selecting relevant information from a range of sources. They will also begin to understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed using evidence from different historical sources.

Geography - This term in Geography, children will develop their knowledge of the world by locating countries using maps, with a focus on Europe, North and South America. They will explore key environmental regions, as well as important physical and human characteristics, including major countries and cities. Pupils will build confidence in using a range of mapping tools such as atlases, globes and digital maps. They will also begin to understand key aspects of physical geography, including coasts and rivers, alongside human geography topics such as settlements and cities, helping them to see how people and places are connected.

Art - This term in Art, children will be focusing on sculpture, creating a final piece inspired by hedgehogs. They will explore how texture can be used to show feeling, expression and movement, using a range of materials such as brush bristles and natural objects like sticks and leaves. Throughout the unit, pupils will develop their understanding of key vocabulary including texture, tactile, movement and expression. Their sketchbooks will show their creative journey, beginning with studying the work of Nils Udo and exploring how natural materials can be used in art. Children will also complete observational drawings and paintings of hedgehogs, before planning, designing and creating their own sculptural piece using carefully selected materials to achieve different textural effects.

DT - This term in Design and Technology, children will complete a textile project building on their previous skills of joining fabric, using templates and evaluating textile products. They will design a functional product for a specific user, creating sketches, prototypes and pattern pieces to develop their ideas. Children will then plan and make their product using a range of tools, selecting suitable fabrics and fastenings based on their purpose and appearance. They will evaluate their final piece against design criteria and feedback from others, while also exploring how textile products have developed over time. Throughout the unit, pupils will strengthen their understanding of joining fabrics, using patterns and seam allowances, and applying key technical vocabulary.

Music - This term in Music, children will focus on performing and singing with expression, developing their understanding of poetry, lyrics, beat and rhythm. Pupils will learn to sing expressively in time with the beat and rhythm, and perform songs and compositions from memory with growing confidence. They will have opportunities to perform both as part of a group and individually to an audience, building confidence and stage presence. Children will also begin to identify how many beats are in a bar when listening to different pieces of music, helping them develop a stronger understanding of musical structure.

Computing - This term in Computing, children will be creating their own video trailers. They will begin by exploring the purpose of a trailer and how it is used to engage an audience. Pupils will then plan their ideas by creating a storyboard for a book trailer, considering key features such as camera angles and shot types. As they develop their projects, children will learn how to import photos and videos into editing software, add text, and use transitions to enhance their work. Throughout the unit, they will also evaluate their own and others’ trailers, helping them to reflect on and improve their digital creations.

RE - This term in RE, children will take part in Philosophy for Children, exploring the big question: how do we decide what is right or wrong? They will discuss how belonging to a group often involves following rules and how these rules help communities to live and work together. Pupils will consider how religious and personal beliefs can influence behaviour and values, and how our own views about right and wrong can be shaped by others. Through discussion and reflection, children will explore how people express their moral views through their actions and begin to understand that ideas about morality and truth can be interpreted in different ways.

PSHE - This term in PSHE, children will be learning about economic wellbeing and developing their understanding of money and the wider world of work. They will explore different payment methods and consider when and why certain options may be more beneficial. Pupils will learn what a budget is and how budgeting can help manage money effectively, as well as discuss how they might feel in different money-related situations. The children will also consider the impact that spending choices can have on others and the environment. In addition, they will learn about the wide range of jobs available, how skills and interests can lead to different careers, and challenge job stereotypes, understanding that these should not limit anyone’s aspirations.

MFL - This term in French, children will focus on building their vocabulary by identifying cognates to help them work out the meaning of fruit-related words. They will also learn how to use the correct definite articles, understanding how these change depending on the gender of the noun. This will help pupils develop greater confidence in recognising patterns in language and begin to form more accurate simple phrases in French.

Play will be at the heart of our learning over the term. Supported by regular assessments using the Boxall Profiles, our children will engage in play activities which support their growth and nurture their social skills.

We have a wide range of games and toys to play with in class, from constructive toys like Geomag and Lego, to board games such as Jenga and Chess. Options like dress-up will help children engage in imaginative play, as well as our class immersive area, which is themed around The Hodgeheg in line with our class book. We have already enjoyed getting messy with the tough trays set up for planting and playing with soil, water play and the animal figures!

Info will be added ready for the 2025/26 academic year.
