Miss Mulligan’s Class

Welcome to Miss Mulligan’s class! The adults in Miss Mulligan’s class are Miss Mulligan (centre), Mrs Holroyd and Mrs Moate. Our text for the Autumn term is Holes by Louis Sachar. We are all really excited to explore the book to see what happens.

We are all very excited about our new class book: Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll.

We weren't supposed to be going to the pictures that night...not when the German bombs had been falling like pennies from a jar.

FEBRUARY, 1941

A bomb blast...

a chance encounter...

her mother's coat.

This is all Olive can remember of the night her sister Sukie went missing. With London unsafe, Olive and her brother are evacuated to the Devonshire coast to stay with a mysterious lighthouse keeper.

There, Olive must solve a mystery of her own: a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous.

This term, we will be exploring how it might have been to have been an evacuee in World War 2 and 'writing a letter home'. We will also be exploring narrative poems and will then write our own about the Kindertransport.  Then we will write a playscript for a World War 2 style play.

We are working really hard on our column addition skills at the minute and lots of us have progressed from drawing it to writing it. Some of us have even begun to check our answers using the inverse operation - this saves Miss Mulligan lots of time as this means we can mark our own learning.

We will shortly be learning all about shape which will enable us to enjoy some fun lessons!

We are really looking forward to our Science topics this term - Light and electricity. A lot of us enjoy playing with the snap and fix electric set so we already have some good skills that we can apply to our lessons.

We can't wait to take part in these experiments.

This term, we will be going swimming at Yarborough Leisure Centre on a Wednesday until Easter.

The children will need to ensure they bring:

A swimming costume/trunks                                                                                            A towel

Children can bring goggles with them if they wish.

History

Our history topic this year is about the Kindertransport. We will explore what it was and why it happened. The children will learn about what life was like for Jewish children in Nazi Germany which will be done an age appropriate way. We will also hopefully be able to take the children on a trip to the National Holocaust Centre where the children will be able to further explore German Jewish children's lives before World War 2.

Geography

In geography this term we will explore the eight compass points and 4 and 6-figure reference points in atlases and Ordnance Survey maps.

We have begun to play with other children during our big choosings and are beginning to make some good friendships.

During our quieter choosings we really like to play with Plus Plus and we love to explore all the different larger choosings in class.

Here are some pictures of us playing.

Although we manage choosing time really well, Mrs Holroyd often struggles to manage these time and she can sometimes lead us astray! She encouraged us to jump out at Mr Moore during Golden Time and make him jump!

Info will be added ready for the 2025/26 academic year.
